When parents ask, "Can stimming be reduced?" the question often stems from a place of love and concern—worry about social inclusion, safety, or underlying anxiety. From a clinical perspective, the goal should never be to train a child to stop stimming through forced suppression or rewards for "quiet hands." Suppressing stims increases internal stress and deprives the child of self-regulation.


However, if a child is stimming continuously throughout the day because their nervous system is in a state of chronic sensory deprivation or sensory overload, we can lower their baseline distress. We accomplish this not by stopping the stim, but by feeding their sensory system proactively through a Sensory Diet.

What Is a Sensory Diet?

Coined by occupational therapist Patricia Wilbarger, a "Sensory Diet" has nothing to do with food. It is a carefully planned, personalised schedule of sensory activities embedded throughout a child’s day.


Just as a physical diet provides necessary nutrients to keep the body healthy, a sensory diet provides specific neurological inputs—proprioceptive (deep pressure), vestibular (balance/movement), tactile, or auditory—to keep the nervous system regulated and organised.


How Sensory Diets Impact Stimming Frequency

When a child’s sensory system is chronically "hungry" for input, they must generate that input themselves through intense, continuous stimming. By providing structured, powerful sensory input before the nervous system reaches a point of deficit, the underlying compulsion to stim decreases naturally.

Key elements of an effective proactive sensory diet include:

  • Heavy Work (Proprioceptive Input): Activities that push, pull, or carry weight—such as carrying heavy books, climbing, jumping on a trampoline, or wearing a weighted vest—provide deep feedback to muscles and joints, calming an overactive nervous system.

  • Movement Breaks (Vestibular Input): Controlled swinging, spinning, or rolling on a therapy ball helps organise spatial awareness and balance, satisfying the brain's need for motion.

  • Tactile and Oral Options: Providing rich tactile exploration (water play, kinetic sand) and intense oral options (crunchy foods, whistles, chewies) satisfies sensory seeking in targeted, functional ways.

When a child’s sensory cup is consistently kept full through a structured daily routine, their need to constantly seek sensory input drops, allowing them to feel settled, focused, and comfortable in their skin.
