When your child starts stimming, is your first instinct to say "quiet hands" or tell them to sit still? Suppressing a safe stim traps that overwhelming sensory energy inside their body, which almost always leads to a full meltdown later. Today, do not stop the stim. If the stim is dangerous (like head-banging), do not just block it—immediately redirect that exact sensory need into a safer alternative, like pushing against a wall or chewing on a sensory necklace.

Many children stim to get visual and proprioceptive (deep pressure) feedback. Print out these self-care coloring pages. The act of coloring is inherently repetitive, rhythmic, and requires pressing down on the paper. This provides a safe, highly regulating sensory outlet that mimics the soothing repetition of a physical stim, helping ground their nervous system without drawing unwanted attention.

Watching your child repeatedly flap their hands, spin in circles, rock back and forth, or hum rhythmic noises can raise many questions for parents encountering these behaviours for the first time. It is common to wonder: Why are they doing this? Is it harmful? Should I be stopping them?


These rhythmic, repetitive movements or sounds are known as stimming (self-stimulatory behaviour). While stimming is most commonly associated with autism and neurodivergence, almost every human stims in some way—whether it is tapping a foot, twirling hair, or clicking a pen. For children, stimming is a primary tool for neurological self-regulation.

The Science of Stimming: Regulation and Expressive Outlet

Stimming serves vital physiological functions within the central nervous system:

  • Sensory Regulation (Up-Regulating vs. Down-Regulating): When an environment is under-stimulating or boring, a child may stim to wake up their nervous system and increase alertness. Conversely, when an environment is chaotic, loud, or overwhelming, stimming acts as a sensory filter, providing a predictable rhythm that calms an overstimulated brain.

  • Emotional Expression: Stimming is often a direct physical expression of intense internal states—such as pure joy, excitement, anticipation, or anxiety—that cannot be contained within the body or expressed through words alone.

  • Pain and Stress Management: The repetitive sensory feedback from stimming releases endorphins, helping children cope with physical discomfort, emotional distress, or unpredictable situations.


Clinical Guidance: What Should Parents Do?

In almost all cases, the most therapeutic response to stimming is to leave it alone. Trying to extinguish safe stimming strips a child of their primary self-soothing mechanism, leading to increased anxiety and emotional distress.


The only time intervention is needed is if the stimming is physically harmful (e.g., severe head-banging or skin-picking) or if it significantly impedes their ability to engage with their environment. Even then, the goal is never to force quiet compliance, but rather to gently introduce a safer sensory alternative that provides the exact same neurological feedback.

Understanding that stimming is a tool for balance allows us to honour our children's unique sensory needs and support their natural path to regulation.
