Watching a toddler swap a crayon back and forth between their left and right hands is a fascinating window into neurodevelopment. While parents often wonder when their child will "pick a hand," hand dominance is not an arbitrary habit or a choice a child makes. It is a visible outcome of hemispheric lateralisation—the process by which the brain assigns specialised tasks to either the left or right hemisphere.

Understanding hand dominance allows parents to support their child's natural brain organisation without forcing premature or artificial choices.

The Science of Lateralisation

In early childhood (ages 1 to 3), mixed hand use is entirely normal as the brain builds cross-hemispheric connections. By ages 4 to 6, as the brain matures, one hemisphere becomes dominant for fine motor control.


Establishing a clear dominant hand allows the brain to develop high-level motor specialisation in one hand, while the non-dominant hand learns to act as the essential "helper hand" (stabilising the paper, holding the ruler).


Clinical Rules for Supporting Hand Dominance

  • Never Force a Right-Hand Preference: Forcing a naturally left-handed child to use their right hand creates cognitive confusion, motor frustration, and unnecessary fatigue, as it forces the brain to route signals through non-specialised pathways.

  • Offer Objects at the Midline: Place crayons, spoons, and tools directly in the centre of the table or plate, allowing the child’s brain to choose which hand reaches out naturally.

  • Watch for Ambidexterity vs. Mixed Dominance: True ambidexterity (equal skill in both hands) is extremely rare. More often, persistent hand-swapping in a 5- or 6-year-old signals motor weakness or difficulty crossing the body's midline, rather than equal skill.

Respecting a child’s natural neurological organisation lays the groundwork for efficient learning, motor coordination, and confidence.

Notice how your child approaches a new activity. Are they constantly swapping hands when a task gets slightly difficult? Today, when handing them a spoon, a pencil, or a toy, place it directly in the centre of their body (their midline) rather than placing it on their left or right side. Giving them a neutral starting point allows their brain to subconsciously reach with their true dominant hand.

Establishing hand dominance requires the brain to firmly assign a 'worker' hand and a 'helper' hand. Print this step-by-step drawing guide. As your child sketches, let them choose their preferred hand for the pencil (the worker), and encourage them to use their other hand to press down and hold the paper steady (the helper). This clear division of labour reinforces their natural dominance and builds crucial writing stamina.
